If we haven’t lost you to the alpine skiing and figure skating broadcasts of the Olympics, you might know that today saw the first day and the slopestyle format of the annual River Jump event in Livigno, Italy. This year, the contest had been upgraded to a 5-Star TTR event, and the riders laid down their action accordingly.

It was American Eric Willett who took home the Brux Slopestyle title and 850 Swatch TTR ranking points this Thursday at the Burn River Jump. With high level snowboarding seen from the 67 riders gathered from all over the world, it was the talented rookies Gjermund Braaten (NOR) who grabbed second place and Roope Tonteri (FIN) who took third. All of today’s top ten riders who have not yet received an invitation or wildcard will compete in Friday’s straight jump format, the Burn River Jump.

Protect Our Winter's "Sixty Days" Campaign

2/22/10

Jeremy Jones and his friends at the Protect Our Winters organization have just launched their “Sixty Days” campaign, a new project designed to mobilize the winter sports community in a unified voice against climate change.

As you may or may not know, The US House of Representatives passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act a few months ago and now the legislation is currently in the hands of the Senate. This important bill is a crucial part in the war on climate change, and the sustainability of the snowboard lifestyle. A strong US clean energy economy will not only insure the future of snow around the planet, but also help protect thousands of small businesses and jobs in local resort communities that have developed alongside ski resorts across the nation.

A Senate vote must take place within the next sixty days, so time is of the essence.

The battle in Washington could very well come down to just a few votes amongst our Senators, and there are 48 still undecided. By visiting the Sixty Days website at www.60daysto.org, you can see where your representatives in the Senate stand. You can also review full and abbreviated copies of the bill to help you understand exactly what is at stake, and find an easy way to send an e-letter to your Senators telling them why passing strong climate legislation is crucial to the economic and cultural well being of mountain communities.

Please visit www.60daysto.org TODAY and make sure your voice is heard.

Eric Willett Takes Silver in Winter X Games 14 Slopestyle!

2/1/10

Vans Am Rider Eric Willett (pictured above) came up HUGE over the weekend at Winter X Games 14. First he qualified for the finals in the Big Air competition on Saturday, going against heavy hitters like Torstien Horgmo and Eero Ettala. Then he took on the same field in the Men's Slopestyle Finals on Sunday, where Eric threw down a monster run and ended up taking home the Silver Medal! Big ups to Eric for filling in for the injured Andreas Wiig, who tweaked his ankle in elimination and couldn't ride for the rest of the event.

“This is my first X Games ever,” Willett said. “Until now, I have just been sitting on the couch watching it at home. To be here is a dream come true and then to get on the podium just tops it all.”

The Vans ladies represented as well in the Women's Slopestyle Finals, with both Hana Beaman and Cheryl Maas (pictured above) riding for a chance at X Games glory. Although they couldn't beat out Jenny Jones or Jamie Anderson, solid runs earned them 5th and 6th place, respectively. Congratulations to all the X Games athletes for snowboarding like the champs that they are and showing the world how it's down.
